Originally, EPA fuel economy ratings for the 2012 automatic transmission equipped 328i were forecasted by BMW to be 24/36 city/highway miles per gallon. The EPA has tested the car itself this time (a relatively rare occasion), and set its own ratings for the automatic 328i at 23 city miles per gallon and 33 highway miles per gallon. The reason for this whole situation is undisclosed, and BMW can't retest the 328i until the 2013 model year, per EPA regulations.
BMW has already posted the lowered fuel economy ratings on its website, but strangely the EPA hasn't updated the dropped fuel economy ratings on its own website.
